Becoming an Instructor – The Process

  • Qualifications for enrolment in our First Aid Instructor program include either an education or medical background.  We require a current resume and a brief face to face interview which serves as an application to enrol in the instructor program.
  • The prerequisite to our Instructor Program includes successful completion of APex Training Solutions' Standard First Aid courses.  Once you have been accepted into the program, you can book into the course by contacting our office at 780.429.6757.  The cost of our SFA course is $110 (GST included). Payment can be made by credit card over the phone when booking.
  • The cost of our First Aid Instructor Course is $300 (GST included).  This includes all teaching materials and training to successfully acquire your instructor certificate.  The instructor certificate is valid for 3 years.
  • The first step in the instructor program is to attend a one-day seminar, which includes a skill review, as well as a full orientation to the instructor program.
  • In addition to the day long seminar, you will be required to successfully complete 2 co-teach assignments.
  • This means full participation in two Standard First Aid courses with the responsibility of teaching about 50% of the course material for each course.
  • You will be teamed with an experienced instructor who will act as your teaching partner and mentor.
  • The instructor will provide feedback to you in writing after each session, plus make recommendations to APex Training Solutions on whether you meet the criteria to be fully certified following your co-teaches.
  • For more teaching experience once you are fully certified, Second Chance CPR & First Aid (APex's largest Delivery Partner) offers regularly scheduled courses on weekdays and weekends.  There may even be limited paid opportunities to teach for Second Chance CPR & First Aid or other Third Party Providers.
  • An instructor in good standing may also apply for Third Party Provider status.  This means that you can independently teach the APex first aid program in the community.
  • In order to teach as a Third Party Provider, you are required to obtain and maintain General Liability and E/O insurance (the cost of which varies, but typically starts around $350/year).
  • The cost of $150 to become a Third Party Provider includes an instructor kit, which will equip the instructor with all the resources required to teach the program effectively.
